INTRODUCTORY COURSE ON FIRE PREVENTION AT TI MAXAKALI

August 7-9, 2023 - Água Boa

August 10-12, 2023 - Pradinho

The introductory fire prevention course in the Maxakali Indigenous Territory was an initiative developed during the ethnomapping and territorial and environmental management workshops held in May 2023. The Tikmũ'ũn reported how the degradation of their Territory due to the expansion of colonial grass planted by farmers and the State itself, especially during the military dictatorship, in an attempt to transform traditional land use practices, cultivation, and land preparation, became a natural fuel during periods of drought. The frequent fires in the Maxakali Indigenous Territory increasingly degrade and compact the soil, posing challenges for reforestation and the implementation of agroforestry farms.

This introductory course was planned by several partners engaged in the environmental recovery of their territory by the Tikmũ'ũn: FUNAI, IEF, IBAMA, Indigenous Schools, UFMG, UFSB and coordinated by the Hãmhi Project and covered topics such as:

1. Fire use practices among the Tikmũ'ũn peoples;
2. Water and soil conservation;
3. Management and use of fire;
4. Presentation of projects and programs to combat fires on indigenous lands;
5. Practical firebreak construction activities;
6. Fire fighting and prevention actions: production of teaching materials and signs.

The participation of men, women, children and shamans in the fire-fighting sign workshop taught by educator and designer Paula Gobetti resulted in a beautiful production of signs, donated to the Project by BH TRANS and transformed by Tikmũ'ũn artists.

These animals here were left because of the fires, but they will return to the forest together. There are no capybaras or alligators here anymore.

Here there are still armadillos, but there are few, there are opossums, but there are few, there are peccaries, but there are few, there are parrots, but there are few, there are frogs, but there are few

And here... Inhambu... and that's all there is here in this area. Where there is this rock, there is a bit of forest too.

And here, under the rock, where there was an old village, there is just a little bit of forest

Here there are anaconda and here there are these animals that it eats too.

There are tegu, armadillo, coati, bare-handed coati, paca, capybara, honeyeater, armadillo, capybara…

Frog, rabbit, true armadillo, jaguar, hedgehog, paca, opossum, peccary, parrot.

To have forests again, we will plant many seedlings so they can grow, and then we will harvest our food.

Seedlings are like children…

If you plant a banana tree, you need to water it thoroughly. If you don't take good care of it, it won't grow quickly.

It's like taking care of a child, if you don't cut their hair, it won't grow quickly. It's the same thing!

If you don't bathe your baby, he'll get dirty, he'll take a long time to grow, and if you don't give him food or water, he'll end up skinny. That's not good!

This one is medicinal, it's missing the bamboo grove and the morotó.

There is a lack of medicinal plants in our forest, but Tupã is very strong!

Yãmĩyxop is strong and will bring the forest back to us!
